Probably best would be a floating running line. Cortland and several 
other manufacturers make them. The floating line will sink easily, 
and you can use it exclusively, unless you aren't going for depth. If 
you want to try a sinking line, you can purchase a sinking running 
line, or get Amnesia or Braided mono, neither tangle as badly as 
plain mono does.

For saltwater salmon, I like to think that shooting heads are the 
ticket for long casts. And you can make them up as you wish, with 
floating or sinking heads and running lines.
