I read recently, and I don't know where (I apologize to the author), about a neat way 
of sinking a leader without split shots, mud or whatever.  I haven't tried it yet, 
because the water is mainly frozen, and the drifts are too damn deep for this gimp to 
get over or through.

You use lead core trolling line.  Cut it into various lengths, from 6inches to 
whatever, and whip loops on both ends.  Loop connect it to the leader on one end and 
the tippet on the other.

This kind of weight will not tangle or hang up on underwater stuff.  

I hope to try it soon, but just heard that there is a possibility of three more days 
of snow.  So it goes.
