They work well for sinking, but are a b*tch to cast. No matter where you put it in your leader, it acts like a real heavy hinge. Be prepared to throw wiiiiiiide loops. I've tried the middle of the leader, and at the top between fly line and butt section. They work great once you get the line into the water, but gettin' it there can take a little work.

You use lead core trolling line. Cut it into various lengths, from 6inches to whatever, and whip loops on both ends. Loop connect it to the leader on one end and the tippet on the other.
This kind of weight will not tangle or hang up on underwater stuff.
I hope to try it soon, but just heard that there is a possibility of three more days of snow. So it goes.
