Hi Deb,
The amount of time needed to fill a Norlander spool is
negligible; maybe 30 seconds when using a drill and
spooling arbor. If I was concerned about wasting such
little time I'd probabaly not be tying flies.

As for the cost, yes the bobbins are expensive (the
spools are not so bad) but so are Tiemco ceramic
bobbins. As I said, if you find yourself using the
bobbin holder quite frequently, I haven't found there
to be a better, more efficient way to go back and
forth than with an automatic bobbin. It quickly
respools the thread and helps prevent the threadwraps
on the fly from loosening. Not the only way to "skin
the cat" but the most efficient I have found.

Currently I have 6 bobbins and 18 spools and I rarely
find myself wanting more or cursing the system because
it takes longer to change colors than with a standard
bobbin. Realistically one would only need one bobbin
($35.00) and extra spools ($10.00 for a pack of 3).
Still more expensive than a handfull of Griffin or
Matarelli bobbins but with a whole lot more
functionality as well.

All bobbin-related things considered, it takes me less
time now than it did when I was tying rotary using the
threadpost and having to respool the thread manually
with a standard bobbin.

And, as an aside, the retail price on a Nor-vise AND a
bobbin kit (bobbin, 3 spools and spooling arbor) is
less than a Barracuda Jr. according to the DK price
sheet I have.
