I was on the Meramec when a jet boat churned through a nice little run I was
fishing. I impulsively shot my fly toward his neck. I hope my better
instincts prevailed and stayed my hand...I hate to think I'm so poor at
casting that I could have missed him otherwise. (I'm getting therapy and
have not yet carried a side arm on a fishing trip.)

Speaking of side arms on fishing trips...the Missouri Department of
Conservation introduced otters into our natural flowing streams. Unlike the
days when the otters were here before, there are no natural predators. The
streams are flat and shallow, they no longer have the deep pools and root
wads for the fish to hide in. As a result, the otters are going on killing
sprees, taking out the trout, small mouth and other game fish, looting the
trout resorts and the chicken coops of local residents. To fix the mess they
started, the MDC has loosened trapping restrictions. (Anyone step in a trap
while fishing?) But friends of mine have started carrying .22s, as have
farmers, vacationers, resort owners, etc.
I angrily wrote the MDC. I suggested they make a poster of an otter in a
trap with a trout in its mouth.
Then I was reminded of the good work they have done. I understand very few
of our streams held game fish before the MDC stepped in and cleaned them up.
The world is a complicated place.

Move in a little closer......double haul, and imagine their head as the
practice plate in the backyard. As the line wrap around their neck and
suddenly pulls them off it is fun. It feels like a good strike, but not
quite like a Texas Bass. The downside, it take a few minutes to get
untangled and you have to listen to a whining jet skier.

Mark:

That was not exactly what I had in mind.
Your suggestion is somewhat less violent then mine.
LOL

Now I am not suggesting that all us flyfisherman carry 9mm's,or become
violent, mind you.
But I sure wish I had something a little more "awakining" when a jet skiier
drove bnetween me and the shore line I was fishing.

FOR GOLFERS
It takes longer to learn good golf that it does brain surgery. On the other
hand, you seldom get to ride on a cart and eat hot dogs while performing
brain surgery.

: That would be an interesting experiment... Attach a 3/0 fly to the
leader,
: stick it through the rock throwers lip, and let 'em try to get away down
: through the riffles...
