Hey Rick, I do that too...I actually tie on the body of the bugger first, then, with only 5-8 tight wraps of heavy thread, attach a goodly amount of marabou of the desired color to the back...Besides, since I use thread the same color as the body of the bugger, the thread just blends in along with the body...

I am also somewhat of an eccentric when it comes to 'throwing away' bad flies. I just take a razor, hack away the body and the underthread and retie...takes about 30 seconds to undo the fly an restart...

Fly-fishing is the venue by which man can return to his natural state of sane thought where wilderness is beautiful and concrete is naught but a force driving us into the stream...:-)

How many of you do this?

I find that a dozen gills will take the marabou off an SMP.
  I tend to just retye the marabou in.

I also use a few other patterns that get the marabou ripped apart.

Does any one else do stuff like this?
