The thread or floss originally used was pure silk, which changes colour when wet.  Orange silk becomes mahogany, primrose silk becomes pale olive, and so on.
 
Modern thread and floss don't change colour the same way when wet, so partridge and mahogany or partridge and light olive may produce better results than partridge and orange or yellow if modern materials are used.....
