Bill, You're probably on the right track in thinking dragonflies. They have internal gills, that water is passed over by sucking in and then expelling in a little jet. This may have something to do with the rapid movement you captured. If you get more interested in bugs think about picking up a seine to collect specimens. There is quite a variety available.
