I guess I will jump in on this.
Red is a good color, I find that dark or blood read works when other reds
don't. From what I am told, red turns black under water so why does red work
when black don't. I don't know. Here on the White and Norfork Rivers, red and
orange are some of the best colors on a fly.
Right now, an olive bugger with a red tail is a killer. The Red Ass is also a
killer My fishing partner is using a sz 16 scud hook wrapped with dark red
plastic micro tube. He has been out fishing me at least 5 to one. The Chili
Pepper has a distinct Fire Orange collar with a bead head, a Fire Orange head
without a bead, It is am last resort fly and seldom fails me. You know I rave
about this fly. I add red gills on all my streamers. I can fish one without
the gills and not get a hit. Pass over the same area with a streamer with red
gills and catch several trout. Pretty much the same for bluegills and
smallmouths.
I feel the same about having eyes on flies. The eyes I do with the fabric
paint are yellow with a red center and a black pupil. I even put a pin head
eye on some of my emergers. I use red or black for this.
