Never thought about it, but when I'm doing decorative wrapping on the rods I build, I suppose I'm doing some underwrapping too. That is especially true when I'm doing some fancy work just above the cork, such as weaving in designs.   Yeah, the underwraps at the guides will strengthen the rod somewhat, but to tell you the truth, I think it's very negligible.

Rene,

A one piece under wrap in one colour with complimenting or contrasting overwraps looks expensive, it shows 2 tips, 2 overwraps and a mid section.  Try it on a pencil or similar.  Mind you i only bothered doing this once, on a 15 foot beachcaster that casts 8 ounces..... .iain

Mark, In the book I mentioned all the examples for the underwraps were for very heavy boat rods. I was not sure if I should extend it to a 8wt. Wrapping rods in the winter gives you ample of time to play around Rene Mark Delaney schrieb: >Rene, > I also would recommend not doing the underwraps....I really don't >see the need for them unless for aesthetics....and I've built up to >12 wt rods, without using them with no problems. > Mark > >Rene Zillmann wrote: > > Tony, Allan, Iain, Dean, > thanks for your help and advice.
