List,
sorry for bothering the list with flyfishing related topics <G>
I'm building a 8 wt rod (I already mentioned this)
In a book I read the suggestion to use 'under-wraps'. The concept is to make thread wraps on the space where the guides will be placed later. The guides are wrapped as usually.
You have the sequence: Blanc, under-wraps, guides placed on them, the usual wraps.
This should strengthen the guides, especcially suggested for heavier weight rods?
Experience? Coments?
They would be purely decorative, in my opinion. I have done
this on casting rods, and have never seen the need to do it on a fly
rod. We did have a thread earlier where people discussed the
more you wrap the rod the stiffer it becomes, and underwraps
could contribute more to this effect.
However, if you think it would prefer the look you get by using a
contrasting color, it wouldn't hurt all that much.
In answer to Dean's question, yes you definitely can see the
underwraps.
