yah, Mark and Bob:
I it is a bitch to rib these suckers three times! But there
is a lot to
be said for durability.
I heard from a relidable source a while back that the
original flies tied
for the spey fly book (1889) were ribbed with the usual
components (3)
and the WOOL WAS TWISTED VERY TIGHT TO BOOT!) so the effect
was one of
tiny coils of wool wrapped forward.
I currently tie Dee flies for searun cutts and always use
schlappen or
feather duster feathers and strip one side and tie in by
the butt and
wrap forward with a guinnee hackle throat. Very nice
looking fly and
effective as hell! (also on steelies) take a look at John
Sheweys
spey/dee book if posssible. I usually only rib twice: once
normal and
once counterwrapped. Usually the hackle needs to be
separated using a
stelleto.
they are some work, but boy what nice flies!
