Expanding on point number 1, I guess it would cause the fly to sit in the water differently, in fact the head of a dry fly might be pushed under the water??

1) I agree, extra weight at the head of the fly is a poor idea.  Ease of threading is not worth the trade off.
 
2) Also, a #22 fly is going to present poorly on 5x or thicker tippet. 
 
3) I have used white river hooks.  I don't want to bash, but I found them brittle -- I broke two in the vise, a few on shrubs, and one on a fish.  They are my last resort, in case I NEED a size sold out in the name brands.
