Dan,
I just "re-discovered" Fly Tying: Adventures in Fur, Feathers and Fun by John McKim.  It has great diagrams on performing a hand whip finish, really goes through a lot of basic techniques, and is not a very expensive book.  It is not designed to be a pattern book like a lot of them but really goes through technique.  It also gives a lot of ideas for making your own fly tying tools.  Great book.

I've been asked to recommend a book for beginners on Fly Tying for a small local library. My favorites are The Art Of Fly Tying by John Vliet.  or The Complete Book of Fly Tying by Eric Leiser. Does anyone have any other favorites. Dan
