Hi Joyce, I enjoy your candid comments on the vfb. You have a knack for telling it like it is. Since you are a professional tier, you have an interest in being non-biased in your approaches and acceptance of new methods.
Which brings me to a point. During the Denver Flyfishing Show (Furimsky's), I was not able to do anything but the rope-dub technique for 3 solid days. Folks who saw the technique left and brought back more people to see, and those brought more. I must've demo'd hundreds of times dries, wets, peacock, and hackle rope-dub methods. I demo'd tying quill-like dubbing bodies on flies down to size 28, with great ease. It seems that unless the technique is demonstrated in person, it has nowhere near the impact on the viewer. I mean that people's jaws were almost literally on their chests when they saw how quickly and easily I dubbed fly bodies with any 'look' they desired, with any dubbing or combination of dubbings, hackle, peacock, and wire- without the use of tools or wax. Another professional tier that I taught the technique to in Green River also has similar results when he demo's the method. I've looked at the Magic Tools and the flies he tied, and I can reproduce any of those without tools or wax or loops, and I can regulate the shape and design of the fly at any time in the process. My question to you is this. Are you able to use the rope-dub effectively in your tying? Are you noticing shortcomings to the technique? You mentioned midge sizes in your post, and this is one of the best places to apply the rope-dub method. I don't feel that vfb tiers are adapting the method to their overall tying. Any comments you have will be appreciated.
