What I've found, with my home made "magic tool," is that I can work more easilly with cdc and other feather barbs than with any other method. Mainly, I can stack more than one feather, and get a denser chenille. I can mix in some flash at the same time. It works well for larger flies. I don't use it for regular dubbing at all.
Magic Tool and Rope Dubbing seem to have two very different applications. By the way, the dowels that come with the Magic Tool are plugs used for joining pieces of wood in cabinet making, and are available at hardware stores (though not at my Lowes or Home Depot) for about $2.50per 20.
