I've never dissected a fly. If I have a sample pattern then I can usually figure out how to tie it. As long as the results are the same then I'm not worried about the methods and if I can't figure it out then I just ask.

This thought is related to the theme of repairing flies. I had a guy tell me once that he admired a certain person's tying so much that he put the man's flies in his vise (one at a time) and disected them. Took them apart, so he could learn from the tying methods, etc. Anyone ever take another tier's flies apart to learn from them? Larry Johnson
