BTW.......... I have been meaning to ask the list something for a
while.
I know that there are a few Jewish members, What is the difference between
Kosher food and non Kosher??? You know, like Pickles for instance????
Del
This is a condensed version, but should suffice. You find most of it in
Leviticus chapter 11, with one special note in Leviticus chapter 19:V19.
Del, I will address your pickles last.
Fish must have scales and fins, catfish has fins but not scales so it is not
kosher. Shrimp, lobster etc. have scales but no fins, not kosher.
Mammals must chew the cud and have cloven hooves. Cattle, sheep, goats and
dear are kosher. Pigs, camels and hares are not.
Birds are kosher, except birds of pray, (No hawks, buzzards, etc.)
No reptiles.
All meat must be fully cooked, no blood.
In Leviticus chapter 19:V19, it deals with cross breeding and Hybrids. Only
Heirloom seed plants are considered Kosher, no hybrid or altered plants. So
kosher dills would be from a heirloom cucumber plant. It is interesting to
note that through gene splitting and such that seed manufactures have added
animal genes to several plant seeds, (one of the favorite is pig genes).
This is supposed to make them more resistant to disease or insect problems.
One reason why I am working on collecting Heirloom garden seeds.
OK, I covered fish so it was fishing related, hope it answered some
questions.
