Are you seeing little curly ends on your tippet when you think you broke off.
If so, you did not break off, the knot slipped. I use the improved clinch with the Lefty Krech twist. I never have a slipped knot any more. To do this, tie an improved clinch. Before going through the final loop to finish the knot, wrap the tag end three times around the twisted part of the knot, then put the tag end through the final loop. Wet the knot and pull it tight. When I break off now, the end of the tippet shows a clean break.
If the tippet is a year old or it has been exposed to the sun too long, chuck it.
As for tippet, I just use what I happen to have on hand.
