I had not heard of the Pitzen knot. I looked up at

http://teosinte2.agron.missouri.edu/flyfishing/pitzen.html

I tied it a couple of times and got the hang of it. Then
I tied it to a #12 hook on one end of a short piece of
2 lb. Maxima ultragreen and a regular improved clinch
knot (which I've used my entire life) to another #12 hook on the
other end. Then I pulled the two hooks gently apart
until it broke. It broke at my Pitzen knot.

I think maybe the care taken in tying and tightening
a knot, and familiarity with using it, means more to knot
strength than the type of knot used.

One thing I like about the improved clinch is that
I can tie it using up very little of my tippet, which doesn't
shorten my leader much. (Of course, if I learned a
stronger knot, maybe I wouldn't have to retie as often.)
