Ronan The majority of people including myself don't use a rotary vise the way it was intended so no worries.  You are supposed to rotate the vise to apply all materials instead of wrapping around the hook by hand. This includes thread.   I use mine for wrapping chenille or dubbing loops and ribs and setting wings.  It is a great tool to help in the aesthetics of your fly.   When tying classic salmon flies or streamers I use it a lot to check the back of my fly.   A true rotary is important in that it holds the hook parallel at all times so it is much easier to wrap the materials onto the shank just holding them straight towards you and turning the vise. It takes getting used to if you've used a stationary vise but once you do it will be second nature and it will be hard for you to go back to your old vise.
