I tie a bead head pheasant tail that is very easy to tie, especially in
smaller sizes. First get a gold bead ( I like Spirit River beads) that
fits the hook size well, their two smallest sizes work for flies from
16 and smaller. You will also need a fine thread for these sizes, 8/0
or smaller; otherwise the thread will bunch up to quickly. Next, place
some fine copper wire on the shank tied down to the bend of the hook
extending back (for ribbing). Next select three to six pheasant tail
barbules (depending on the size of the hooki, you will get the right
amount with trial and error) and tie their tips in for the tail using
only one or two pinch loops on top of each other right at the bend of
the hook. Check the size of the tail and adjust if necessary, then
lift up the tag end and wrap the thread under it up to the bead. Next,
palmer the tag end up to the bead and tie off. You can determine the
bulk of the body by how much over wrapping you do, a slight body is
more realistic than a fat one. Next wrap the copper wire up to firmly
secure the pheasant tail and tie off. Add a wrap of peacock herl, and
tie off,then whip finish behind the bead. This is my favorite fly and
I am sure it has caught over 500 fish in many waters. It is very
simple which is its virtue, and once you get the hang of it you can tie
a dozen in an hour, even if you are a slow tyer like myself.
