Henk, as you well know, the politics of the "Circut" are endless. Seems to
me, it's mostly an "old buddie, buddie" type a thing, for the most part.
Those that got "IN" back in the days are still in, unless they've had
fallings out with the promoters. You practically have to wait til someone
dies it sometimes seems. So that sorta puts the rest of us, at the mercy of
the promoters. I started tying at the shows at the CFTG table(s), and we do
most all the east coast shows. Then i branched out by simply pursuing the
FFF, the Upper Snake River Cutthroats, Tony (for the Sowbug), and Jim Krul
for the two shows in Danbury, Conn. And after more than a dozen yrs. of
waiting and going every yr. to the two big Somerset shows, i think i finally
have Chuck where i want him, lol. You gotta bribe him with flies of
course.......LOL. All kidding aside, it's mostly an "All good things," type
a deal.....sorta hurry up and wait, LOL. It helps if you gotta nich to fill.
Something you do that not to many others are doing. They (the promoters)
watch you and see how and if you can hold an audience also. I'm lucky too,
in that when my wife is seated with me tying, we make a team that different
type people can find something(s) they can relate to. We are VERY different.
One bad thing about the shows nowdays is the fact that they have to be so
money conscious/oriented that it doesn't leave much room for "education" in
the tying sense. Sure there will be plenty of "classes" being held, but the
"tyers row" guys are being squeezed more and more by the promoters to have
to buy their spaces. And that's definately a loosing money proposition for
most tyers. Bad enough you've got your travell, food, pet-sitter, hotel,
etc., etc., expenses without having to "Buy" a booth. And the promoters know
this.............guess it's one way to weed out the wanna-bees. As to your
thoughts about $$$$. I have no problem at all selling flies, or charging for
lessons, but i'll never make any serious money in it either. The money just
isn't there. It's supplemental at best. And that's all it ever will be. No
biggie, you do it because you love it, and because it's good for you. Any
other reason is ........well.......O's and A'........O's and A's. later,
mark.........p.s. i wanna see them tools........

Oops. Sorry guys. Thank you for catching that Tony.
I know many of you won't touch this one.... But what are your feelings
about the politics and such that go on in some of these groups. It seems
To me that it can really spoil the fun. Most tiers don't try to make a
living from their tying. Someone once told me when money enters the
picture it takes out all the fun. I've experienced some of this first
hand
And at times have questioned what my goals will be with this. I still
have
a very hard time charging people for flies or lessons. So I will never

a living at this. I like to give and share and of course swap!!
What are your thoughts and experiences. Not that I'm a negative thinker
but
don't try to coat this with all the warm and fuzzies because I'm really
interested in how you react to it and how you've gotten beyond the
politics.
I don't tie for money, I don't sell flies, I don't ask money for demos,
other than expenses, if relevant/appropriate. I DO sell the tools I make,
for a nominal fee... Except at the FFF conclave that is, as the FFF in
their unlimited wisdom this year instated a rule that for tiers to sell
anything, they should register with the organization, and pay a USD 50 fee
to do so. I would probably not have sold enough tools to recoup that
'investment' (said that I sold them for a nominal fee only) so I ended up
just giving some away...
