Then i branched out by simply pursuing the FFF, the Upper Snake River Cutthroats, Tony (for the Sowbug), and Jim Krul for the two shows in Danbury, Conn.
Sort of what I did over here. Benefit here is, we don't have big 'commercial' shows like in the US, so it's a little easier to get in.
And after more than a dozen yrs. of waiting and going every yr. to the two big Somerset shows, i think i finally have Chuck where i want him, lol. You gotta bribe him with flies of course.......LOL. All kidding aside, it's mostly an "All good things," type a deal.....sorta hurry up and wait, LOL. It helps if you gotta nich to fill. Something you do that not to many others are doing.
Which is precisely why it is relatively easy for Euros to get into US shows, and the other way around... You bring a different flavour.
One bad thing about the shows nowdays is the fact that they have to be so money conscious/oriented that it doesn't leave much room for "education" in the tying sense. Sure there will be plenty of "classes" being held, but the "tyers row" guys are being squeezed more and more by the promoters to have to buy their spaces.
Well, being a non-commercial tier, that's one thing I would never do. I'm paying my own way to a show, down to lodging and food usually, and I don't make a dime off it, so there's no way I'm actually gonna fork out money to be allowed to tie.
.............guess it's one way to weed out the wanna-bees.
Well, if you come all the way from Europe, chances are, you're no wannabe ;-)
As to your thoughts about $$$$. I have no problem at all selling flies, or charging for lessons, but i'll never make any serious money in it either.
Well, I don't have no problem selling flies, it's just that at a show, I am there to show people interesting things. If they are interested enough to sit through a fly, and preferably interact with what I'm doing, I think they deserve that fly ;-)
As for 'lessons', usually being demos at FF clubs, the same holds. If they will cover my travel expenses, I will be glad to try and entertain them. Now if someone stepped up to me and asked for private tying lessons, I'd probably start charging...
The money just isn't there. It's supplemental at best. And that's all it ever will be. No biggie, you do it because you love it, and because it's good for you. Any other reason is ........well.......O's and A'........O's and A's. later, mark.........p.s. i wanna see them tools........
Yep. The only reason I sell the tools is to recoup some of the investment in turning equipment and wood...
For some early work, which ain't particularly sophisticated, but gives a good example of the type of tools I'm doing, point your browser to
