Heavy bases are easy...
make a wood model for 3/4 ply with chamfered sides and rounded edges, glue a slidhtly tapered block about 1 inch squar against one edge take to a brass foundry and have them cast a brass or bronze base from your model. drill to suit your vice and drill and tap for a stem fixing bolt.
costs about 25 pounds here

Iain, i'm thinking of bringing my Dingo to the Sowbug so Denny can have another look at it. Maybe i'm doing something wrong, as far as why it always seems to not hold the hooks so great. Got something else for him to look at anyway, lol. I'm definately going to send the Jaws (both sets) back and the bobbin craddle holder too. Hopefully they've fixed that situation by now. I tell you though, if i can get it to work just the way it should all the tme. I'll be happy with it. I have REALLY become so use to the way the whole jaws/head rotates, on it's own axis, so to speak, that i'd hate to be without that one function anymore. That's the coolest part of the vise. Love that feature. Let's hope they have finally done something about that joke of a base too. I'm gonna hit on 'em for a better one if they have it. mark.....
Iain, thankx for all the info, effort, and concern. I found a company (don't
have the name handy) in Idaho that makes great bases, and i got one. It's
got a huge footprint, and is very heavy. I've used it with my traveler(s),
and with the Japanese Arcadia. The hole for the stem won't hold the Dingo
stem unless it's made larger. If i ever get the Dingo working correctly,
i'll have someone drill it out to fit. This base has really cool little
trays built right in to hold hooks, beads, or whatever. And inside the trays
are engraved fly illustrations. Plus the base has a brass plate in the
center with the FFF logo and my name engraved. I got it, along with my
Renzetti (CAM) Traveler at the FFF I.C. in 2003 in a silent auction. GREAT
base, just doesn't fit the Dingo stem. mark
