Del, Joan Wulff teaches the straight up over&above you head approach, and it works for some. My wife loves that method. I remember when we took the official courses at Orvis in Manchester, Vermont in '93 and they taught us to hold the rod out to where we could only see half our thumb nail. I really like that method. For me it's more confortable. My wife and i have both graduated the Wullf scholl for casting instructors and i still teach my way. All the tried and tested methods are good. You just need to find what fits you. I've watched all the instructors give test for cetification each year that i've been to the FFF I.C. and every guy has his eye on something he can help a student with. I've watched Jason Borger and his father teach, Mel Krieger teach, Joan Wulff teach, and Lefty teach and Barry and Cathy Beck teach, and Ed Jarwoski teach, and Bob Jacklin teach, and Floyd Frankie teach, and Jack Dennis teach, and Steve Rajeff teach and so many others and they all have something you can use because it's all based on experience and knowledge. Years of both, many years. I'll never be able to shine the shows of any of them as a caster. But that's ok. I'm only out to have fun, and enjoy my time on the water. If your casting is intefering with you ability to do that, get help. mark

I think that part of my problem is that I cast side arm. I can cast overhead, but I prefer not to. My overhead cast are sloppy and unsightly, and I believe I put fish down with them. My side arm cast are great, to a certain distance
(30-35 ft.)
