DonO,
Thanks! Do you know the number of that Mustad Hook? Maybe it's one
that isn't made anymore. I couldn't find one in my catalog. Your
discription of the pattern is correct. It also has a little partridge
hackle for legs.

I learned hat fly so long ago that it must have been on a Mustad fine-wire
dry fly hook. In fact, I still have the materials left over somewhere in
that mess I call a fly room. I would give that a shot, as I remember even
on that hook, it was a squeeze to get the bead over the eye. If the
pattern
is the same, you use brown foam for the over-wing shell and two brown or
black goose biots for the 'oars'. Correct?
I'll go look and see what I can dig up from the ancient past.

Subject: [VFB] Bead Question
Help! I have here in my hot little hand a water boatman type fly sample
on
a size 14 hook with a "scintilla bubble" bead on the shank. These are
the
football shaped beads, 6mm X 3mm, pearl in color. Now, I need to know
how
to get the bead on the hook! Of course, this shape bead has to go over
the
eye end of the hook rather than the bend. The Scintilla package says to
use
a Tiemco 101, a straight-eye hook. Not even close! Won't go over the
eye.
I also tried a Daiichi
1110. The eye is even bigger. The only hook I found that the bead will
go
on is a Tiemco 2312, but because of the curved shank the bead nearly
occludes the gap. So, does anyone know of a regular length size 14 hook
with
a very small eye? The only other alternative is to ream out the bead
holes,
not an inviting prospect since I have 8 dozen of these to tie! Thanks in
advance!
Janet
