  I was thinking about your question (about saddles, etc and
"straightening" them), and I think that a flat sheet of class (as in
some cutting boards) would be your best bet.  I've seen something by
David White on that topic, let me see if I can find it through
google... ok, typical disclaimers apply, no affiliation, etc etc. 
There's a description of something similar to what I've called the
"wet- stick" method, only using golden pheasant crests on a horizontal
