There are those that tie the appropriate fly and have boxes for each part of the hatch. Different patterns for each fly and so on and so forth. Some people have the time and energy for such endevors.
WELL, I NEVER! nOT ENOUGH TIME? ER, THAT'S ME BUT I REALLY ENJOY THE TIME I GET AND HAVE PLENTY OF ENERGY. SO FAR, MY TYING INCLUDES THOUSANDS OF FLYS AND i LOSE MANY TO EACH I STILL HAVE.
I tie what works. I also don't like to spend lots of time on each fly. Why tie up a Cahill pattern, when a EHC or CDC&E will work just as well? Add to that the infamous Stimulator, a good 'searching' pattern fly. It works, but isn't supposed to mimick a certain species. The Gold Ribbed Hares Ear is the same way. Simple tie, doesn't reflect anything in particular, but works wonders.
WELL, I'M A LOT LIKE YOU IN THAT I TEND TO TIE AND FISH ONLY A FEW SELECT FLYS. AS FOR THE STIMULATOR, IT HAS CHARACTERISTICS OF WESTERN STONES, CADDIS AND MAYFLYS...AND IN COLORS WHICH I CAN'T GET A GRIP ON, BUT YOU ARE RIGHT, THEY WORK... SOMETIMES.
I tie what works most of the time. That's just me and I think there are more like me out there, and newer tyers are falling into that category and with newer materials out there that traditional patterns don't have incorporated or new material versions of traditional patterns don't seem to exist.
WE ALL WANT TO FIND THE NEW BEST THING. SOME TYERS HAVE INVENTED NEW PATTERNS THAT WILL BE AROUND FOR A LONG TIME, LIKE BYARD'S KILLER KADDIS, HANS' CDC & ELK AND TONY'S CHILI PEPPER. FUNNY THING ABOUT THESE PATTERNS, THEY SEEM TO CATCH ON WHEN ANGLERS TRY THEM WITH FAITH AND THEN RESULTS. HOW MANY PATTERNS MIGHT BE LOST BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT GIVEN A CHANCE?
That leads to another question for ya Muf - what happens to that traditional pattern with the modern material twist? Does the Light Cahill become the Foam Light Cahill or does it become Dougs Foamie Light? Name changes seem to happen to all the patterns as new materials or ways to use old materials come about. Does it matter then that we're using Traditional Pattern X or Traditional Pattern X Ver. 2.75? Both work, right? I say use what
you're comfortable with.-->Garry
IM WITH YOU ON USING NEW MATERIALS AND THAT WAS NOT MY CONCERN. IT WASN'T THE NEW PATTERNS THAT CONCERNED ME BUT THE BUGS (or lack thereof) THAT WERE GIVING THEM A PLACE IN OUR BOX.
Gary, you ahve a good hold on what's going on and I sure hope you continue to contribute locally and here at the VFB. Let's fish sometime.
