No reason you can't use plastic beads. If you want a heavier fly just add some lead wire. Some plastic beads will loose their color after r they are wet. I had a batch that turned pink after the fly was used several times.

Not having any Crow, I am successfully using black wing feathers
    from one of my genetic roosters. Has worked well for me since the
    Sow bug last Spring. Also not having the black bead, I like Tony
    have resorted to the Gold bead. Works for me.
