Ian: Thanks.. Yeah, i have been using the tapered hole beads.. Maybe I'm using the wrong sized bead on the wrong sized hook.. I'll adjust both sizes and see how they do..I normally tie My Chilies on #8's too, but I think the beads I've been using are only about 2mm... and I have some 1/8" I think it is.. Probably about 5-6 mm???? And they go over the hook eye...So , I'll have to order some beads between those two sizes and maybe they will slip over the size 8 hooks. Proper Proportions (or judging them)  has always been one of my weak points in tying...I guess though, since I have only been at it less than a yr, just takes more "sperience" as we say in Bama..Thanks again... Chuck

I just tied some size 8 Chilli peppers using a 4 mm bead. I did not have to Crimp the barb to get the bead over. These beads have a tapered drill which makes it easy to get round the bend.

The hooks I use have quite smallish barbs, ie they are smaller than the eye, so a bead that passes over the babr and doesnt slip of the eye needs to have just the right size hole. The beads are designed for fly tying so I guess the manufacutires have worked this out.

On the other hand, using Glass beads on bigger hooks requires a careful crimping of the barb.. Being gentle with the pliers I have been able to maintain a little barb and still get the bead on.. (ie not squishing it down too far..)

In terms of dropping fish on barbless hooks, for me this usually happens when the pressure comes off the hook, which can be in a jump or a flop... a wee babrb is often just enough to hold the hook in..

Cheers Ian

Ian: I have had that problem a LOT too, it seems, so, that brings up a
whole new question... Some of My FAVS and best flies are like the Chili Pepper,
and require a bead head.. So, how do I get the bead on the hook with the barb
stuck out???? Thanks, Chuck

I am with Don O.. I have more " hooked and not landed" on
barbless than barbed hooks.

Note Modern Barbed hooks have much smaller babrs thatn hooks of
the 60s and 70s... which look like harpoons in comparison to todays chemically
sharpenend babies..

Cheers Ian
