Does anyone have a good article or good advice on using deer hair? I have not spun much and my groups are not packing as tightly as I would like.
Eh, read Chris Helm, Dave Whitlock, or AK. Use strong, flat thread, such as Danville's flat waxed nylon, or 'heavy' gauge GSP, spin on a bare shank, religiously remove underfur from your clumps of deer hair, use high quality spinning hair, DON'T make your clumps too skinny (err on the side of too thick rather than too thin), take two loose wraps while holding the clump, tighten and let spin, then take 2 or 3 more wraps, let the bobbin hang and compress with a hair packer (Chris Helm's brassie, Griffin's packer or the Anvil hair packer) to the point that you think you will bend or break the hook, then apply some more pressure still, then make two wraps in front of the hair and slide these against the hair under tension. Repeat until the hook shank is full...
