This just made me think of another question.. If I start out with a, say, 5X
leader (4 pound .006 test for a round figure, then what size (or diameter,
or poundage) tippet should I use with the above mentioned leader??? and is
there a leader/tippet chart anyway?? Thanks, Chuck

Glenn: I'd love to have that formula.. I have an 8ft 2 pc rod, that is a 5
wt rod (but, I want a 9ft 4wt rod)and I use a 6wt weight forward line. I
do like my furled leaders better than I did the tapered ones I was using,
but would like to tie my own too, Thanks, Chuck

Chuck, I have know experience with furled leaders . Always staying with
has works for me for over thirty years and prefer tying my own leaders.
You can write me or anyone else that is interested , direct
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and I be glad to sent you my leader formulas that was
originally design for tournament casting of BillyTalyor ,when gut
leaders were used. I use all super strong Ovis tippet material .The flex
of a rod will take up some. and absorbed some of the shock on the leader
.Pass letter here I recommend using a fish scale use for weighting fish
and attach to the fly line and by putting pressure different bends of the
rod will let you know how much weight pressure is pulled . The longer the
rod I feel the less breaking leaders off. I use between a nine foot and
ten foot rods of two piece rods. Remember in choosing a rod ,choose one
line smaller and put the next size on .example a 5 wt. rod I put a 6 wt
line . Glenn Overton

Reuven, Glen, Tony.. Thanks for the tips.. I didn't have any break offs
as I have NOT used that tippet material.. I was afraid to use it because
it was soooo easy to break by hand, I was afraid that even a nice
bluegill would break it... I guess I'll just stick to the 4 pound mono I
have to use as tippet material, and then maybe order some more of the 6X
Orvis (so the test I do will be the same) and test the new spool against
the old spool and see if that is just how easy it breaks... Glen, On my
leader, it is brand new..I made it myself..It is furled from 6/0 clear
tying thread and is VERY strong.. Just that tippet material felt too
weak to me, and I was afraid to try it, Chuck

Chuck,
Sounds like you have some bad tippet material.
I use 6X most of the time seldom have a break off.

Folks: We have been talking about tippet material,
and I have a question... I have a roll of Orvis 6X
3.5 pound test .005 diameter tippet.. It "rolls
over" well for me, but when I take a piece and pull,
it just is soo small, it snaps with very little
power to break it. I know that fish "weigh" a lot
less in water, than if you were pulling them in on
land. But, does anybody lose a lot of fish with this
small (6X) tippet??? or Not?? I have just started
using a 4 pound "mono" line, that is much harder to
break, but does NOT "turn over" as easy, at least
not for me it don't.. Thanks in advance, Chuck
