On flies here in southwest Louisiana, I've managed to hook several species of turtles (including snapping) all relatively small fortunately. I've managed to avoid hooking any alligators on the fly (although I did once hook up with one using a plastic lizard on spinning tackle. I couldn't wind the 6:1 reel fast enough to keep it away from him!! Managed to pop the hook out of his mouth well away from the boat.) For odd fish catches, while fly fishing for bluegill I caught an 8" golden shiner...didn't realize I was fishing for mega-bass live bait. In saltwater the oddest was probably relatively small hardhead and gafftopsail catfish on a small shrimp fly. There were small shrimp all over at the beach that day. I didn't realize the surface slurps were actually from catfish. I was quite disappointed since I expecting speckled seatrout or at least croaker. Only other non-fish species was a small bird that dove at the leader, when the sunlight glinted off it (perhaps the bird thought it was an insect?) and it got tangled up in the leader during the cast. Bird was released unharmed.
