There is a bonefish fly that has been around for a long time called the Chili Pepper. It has many of the same colors of the woollybugger Chili. I agree with "Cranky Paul" that you should try and find if the name has been used, but frankly, it's an almost impossible task. As someone who develops flies, it's also a very dicey line where a pattern becomes "new" as well. Recently, I thought I had developed something new enough, then after the fly company accepted it and added it to their catalog, I found almost the exact pattern in a book. I told them I thought they should still sell it, but I wouldn't take any royalties for that pattern. I think we're very lucky lawyers haven't been involved much in fly patterns...

Hey DonO,

I know it's a sign of advancing age and an overly sensitive skin about
minutiae. The pattern you refer to is at least 30 years "younger" than
the original I quoted. I get really p...ed off when some turkey doesn't
have the decency to check the literature before naming a fly.
Can you imagine if I threw together some materials and suddenly
advertised it on the web and wrote about it in books as the Chile
Pepper. Yes, it's only a fly, but a little respect for the originators
of patterns is justified. I guess we just have to start copyrighting
pattern names.

Paul,

I found that one too, when I was searching to the fly I was told about.
Looks like we have two flies with the same name. Maybe it don't count if
one is a Canadian name and the other has a USA name, eh?
