"At all lightly fished waters, fishing success gradually declined between
spring and early fall At the heavily fished kale , however, with 8
angler-hours per hectare (.40 acres), catch rate fell fast within seven days,
despite release of all trout. Within 30 days, angler catch rates fell from 16
to 4 trout per day. This drop could not be explained by season changing water
quality, feeding conditions, or hooking mortality. The catch rate remained low
in the subsequent month. The authors conclude that 'learned hook avoidance'
best explained this result for highly catchable naive trout."
