"It is also critical for a fish to open its mouth at eh right distance from
intended prey. If the mouth opens too soon or too late, prey may not be pulled
into the strongest part of the stream of water that enters the predator's
mouth; it may escape or be washed into side of the bass' mouth. This may help
explain the many missed strikes when reeling crankbaits at medium or high
speed. Strike accuracy also is related to the shape of the water volume taken
into the fish's mouth during suction feeding. Water intake by bluegills has a
higher profile than that of bass. It's clear that suction feeding is a complex
phenomenon- a complete explanation involves a combination of factors and awaits
further research."
