From : Glenn Overton.....CRANEFLY PATTERN
On the Kootenai River in the Northwest corner in Montana the Yellow
Cranefly is one of those delicious flies the trout really favor here and
few people fish the cranefly hatch. I have tied them with split wings
and tied then in the most realistic ways possible and they all work well
even when I use partridge hackle as a dry fly hackle to get the legs acting
like the natural.Again they all work but the best style of tying a cranefly
for me with consistency in fooling trout the most ,is the Cranefly tied in a
FOUR and AFTER STYLE as renegades flies are tied but not so much
hackle So here on the Kootenai they are of a pale yellow color ,tied
on a #14 hook.

So here is what I use :

Thread::  color of the natural.
Hook...# 14 standard dry fly hook.or a hook size that match
the length of the natural in your area.
Rear hackle : about four turns of grizzly hackle ,medium in color
but not to dark when tied. The hackle length is just pass the barb.
Body : pale to a light yellow yarn or a color that will match the cranefly
in your area and size. With a little practice you can strip yarn
or comb it out the yarn fibers with your fingers to get the yarn in a smaller diameter for a slimmer body ,Give the yarn a little twist so it
doesn't pull apart when tying around the hook shank.Or dubb a
body if you don't have the yarn to match .And wet the fly to check
if the body is the color you wanted.
Front hackle : About five turns of grizzly hackle in front. It seems like
you can use grizzly hackle and most flies especially the smaller ones. The front hackle is a little longer then the front but not to much.

Randy,

My search has turned up that they are cranefly larva, one of the few aquatic
versions.

See my emails with reference sites.

Thanks for looking.
