In my humble opinion, it's not the chat room that makes this list what it
is. I have entered the chat room on occasion but have found that the
conversation is often controlled by a couple of people. I don't think that
this is deliberate - just the way the topic of discussion unfolds.

It is unfortunate that the list has lost some of its interesting characters
over time. Maybe they became bored or were looking for greener pastures. I
recently re-joined the FF@ list and found it quite different than I remember
it. I even asked the FF@ list members what had happened as the e-mail
subjects of conversation at the time were primarily coffee, coffee makers,
nutella and American/worldwide politics plus some flyfishing and superb
photo journals by Dave Lewis. That list has changed too - there is a group
of regulars that keep it going but are quite happy to discuss non ff
subjects. I found two or three former and some current VFB members there. I
suspect that there may be more lurking in the background.

Have we run out of interesting FF items to discuss? I don't think so. My own
fly fishing club is the same. - The Totem Flyfishers is the first fly
fishing club to be registered in BC and is around 40 years old. When I
became a member some 26 years ago I was eager to learn from the existing
members, some of whom were very knowledgeable.
Time has taken its toll and many of the early members have passed away or
become too frail to fish like they did. Some of them were real characters
and were well respected for their knowledge. Now members complain that the
club is not what it used to be. In its early days, the meetings were
interesting and exciting because the subjects of conversation were new to us
and we had to try the various methods, flies and places out. Now that we
have absorbed that information, it is no longer new to us and loses its
excitement.

The other situation is the people involved. You can't turn back the wheel
and reinvent those people that provided interesting information, however
some newcomers with some new to us knowledge of certain flies, methods or
places would be welcome.

Dean,
Good to see you on the list, seems there are a lot of
us lurking. What do we need to get the list going like
it used to be.
