Tony: You're kidding.. That's just my luck..Soon as I like a product it gets canned ..So, if they don't carry it as Orvis, what can I buy in the future (what brand name) that will be like tying with Gudebrod ???? Or is there one??? I like Uni Thread too and I guess I can tie with it in the future...On the thread I need for the swap, that is it, black.... Thanks, Chuck

Chuck,
Sorry to say, Gudebrod has quit making tying thread
for the general market. There is a possibility they
are still making the 10/0 and 8/0 for Orvis under the
Orvis name. I had gone totally to 10/0 even for my
larger flies. At times I would use 8/0 but it felt
like rope to me. I dumped all my 3/0 and about all of
my 6/0.
I still have some 10/0 that I get stingy with but if
you will let me know what color you need for the swap
flies, I will see if I have a spool I can spare and
send it to you as long as it is black.
The 10/0 is finer than the 12/0 by another company.
Chris Helm did a study on threads, it is somewhere on
the Internet, it will give you all the information you
want of the different threads.

Folks: I'm in one of the Midge size 18 or smaller
swaps... Well, I don't know how in the world I'm
gonna tie those..See, I have been tying my flies I
fish with on size 8-12... But, I just started my
Bi-color flies for Rick's swap using size 14's...
and I can barely see those.. So that led me to the
question. How in the WORLD am I gonna tie the 18's
??? LOL.. I usually use size 6/0 thread... and I use
3/0 if I'm gonna use thread to build up a thread
body.. But I ordered some 8/0 thread the other day
for the size 18 midges/small drys.. Will the 8/0
instead of 6/0 help Me much???? Oh, and Tony..I
don't know if you remember it or not, but last year
I said I did NOT like Gudebrod thread?? Well, black
is about my most used color of thread, and i had run
out except for a spool of Gudebrod about the time i
made that statement. and now, I like it better than
any other brand of thread...I don't know if it just
grew on Me, or if it's just what one gets used too,
but I can now TRY to use other brands, but it just
ain't the same. i hope they never stop making
it...So, that is Gudebrod size 8/0 that I ordered..
Will it be small enough to tie the size 18's good???
I know we had had discussions about threads and how
one brands 8/0 might be the same as another brands
6/0, or 12/0, and that the only real way (I think it
was) to compare apples to apples was to go by denier
weight??? But threads like Gudebrod don't tell ya
the denier weight for it's sizes, so how do you know
outside of ordering some and finding out that way??
to the ppl who are tying flies that will be smaller
than 18, my hat's off to ya, cause I'm trying to tie
these 18's with my 3.50 power reading glasses and
can hardly see the hook hahaha... Course, I need to
put myself up a white or maybe light pastel
background to tie against I guess it would help
some.I tied one size 28 last year, but I think that
might be a first and last for me LOL..Thanks, Chuck

Oh, one last thing.. If one goes by denier weight to
see how thick a thread is, if it is a waxed thread
vs non waxed, wouldn't that throw the denier thing a
curve??? Because of the weight of the wax??
