From reports I've read, Apache's goal is not to be the fastest web server, but one of the goals is to adhere to the standards of HTTP, etc. I'm no fan of Microsoft, but if someone says IIS is faster than Apache, I won't deny it, what I will do is point out that Apache runs on many platforms, is very extendable through modules, and I don't have to worry about the license being revoked on it every day.
