Error error error, I made the same mistake as Apple. Please disregard my aspect ratio waffle.
Many thanks to Michael Verdi who just pointed out in the video conference where I went wrong. The maths in my explanation does explain what the quicktime 7 export option is doing, but its wrong. QT 7.0.3 doesnt take account of the fact that DV pixels are rectangular. So when you watch 720x480 or 720x576 DV on a computer, it is squashed because computer pixels are square and dv pixels are wider. Apple inore this when they try to preserve the aspect ration when downsizing DV footage using ipod export option. Anyway what this means is that all the aspect ratio stuff I waffled about earlier should be ignored, and Apple need to learn this too.
