Specifically referring to FeedBurner... their numbers aren't very accurate. Some robots are viewed as people which can cause inflated numbers. Also, there are a few ways to inflate your readership numbers.
It is absolutely essential to be in aggregators (directories) if you'd like to increase viewers. I agree, comments are invaluable. Not only are those people real viewers, but they take the time to offer feedback. I'm not sure how to delete spam from Blogger, but many others use it here and should be able to provide more insight. I'm assuming that Blogger does not provide in depth stats, which is a shame.
