Hello Steve, and everyone else who has chimed in on this.

The thing is, people are saying they can watch previous episodes of
ours that were encoded using exactly the same method as the latest
ones (at least I don't think I changed any settings between then and now).

There's some talk of the difference between square iPod pixels and
DV-AVI pixels (slightly rectangular) being part of the problem, so I'm
testing a workaround for that. Still having to rely on others to test
on their iPods as I don't have one!

Here are the latest files ... one a straight MP4 file, the other
containing our usual clickable link at the end:

I'd appreciate anyone trying these on their vidpod. The only other
option I can think is to encode with QuickTime using the video iPod
preset, then crunch down the bitrate somehow.

Steve, here are the encoding specs I've been using. As far as I can
tell they are well within the iPod spec:

File format, MP4
Video format, H.264
Data rate, 225 kilobits/second (roughly 28 kilobytes/sec)
Optimized for download
Image size 320 x 240 QVGA
Frame Rate 24
Key Frame, automatic
Frame Reordering, box ticked
Then click Video Options, and ...
Restrict profile(s) to baseline.
Encoding mode best quality (multi-pass)
Then click OK
Now in the second-top drop-down box select Audi
Format, AAC
Channels, mono
Data Rate 16kbps
Output sample rate 22.050kHz
Encoding quality better
