OK the problem seems to be the same one that Verdi reported earlier in the year. Manually creating baseline h264 in quicktime no longer seems to work on ipod. Havent found a quicktime workaround or more detailed explanation of the problem yet.
Solution is to either use ipod export (but I dont know how you will reduce the bitrate further afterwards and still have a working file). Or use a different encoder. Are you on Mac or PC? For Mac try iSquint: http://www.isquint.org/ For PC Im a little out of date of whats available, there should be some free encoders, or something like the latest Nero Recode should work. Note that the iSquint site details some problems with files on 60GB Ipods with firmware 1.1. This appears to be another bug, seperate to the problems youve been having. I dont have a 60GB ipod so I cant explore that stuff. Apple will have to do real with the next ipod if they ever want me to buy their stuff again, having been a Mac & ipod user for 10 months, I feel let down in all sorts of ways.
