I think I may be missing something, not understanding the level of innovation people are attaching to the iPhone.
The user interface seems real nice, and the multi-touch display is innovative (I assume the starting point for it was the 2 finger stuff you can do on macbook trackpads). But a lot of the other stuff seems neither new, nor necessarily as groundbreaking as some are assuming (we'll just have to wait and see how locked-down it is). Seriously, I can use google maps on my pocketpc mobile phone, I can use my finger, it has wifi & 3G, and its bound to be more open than the iPhone. As I said previously it does suck on many levels, the most noticable being sluggish and unattractive GUI slows things down. In my opinion Apple do frequently innovate on the user interface and ease of use, and Microsoft & Bill Gates are usually dull as dishwater. But theres no way Im going to hold Apple up as a shining example of openness, enemies of the status quo. They seem to be going in that direction sometimes, as with video on the itunes store, but they partner with the large giants of the past, which seriously undermines such hopes. I will cahnge my tune on this if they ever take a more progressive stance on things like DRM, but they havent to date. Someone pondered whether flash support will be included in the iphone browser, I think thats an extremely good question. I wonder just how much more Microsoft would have been laughed at if it were they that did this iPhone, and didnt include the ability to record video with the camera, rather than the easy ride Apple are so far being given for omitting this feature.
