Hi Randy,
the firewire target mode was lost on the macbook (non pro and non
white), because there is no equivalent for that on usb 2.0.
if you still want to use your XL1 and ingest video without the
firewire, you could also think of another way... sony sells this device:
http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/product-HVRMRC1K/
and the must be others selling similar stuff, but its expensive
normally. :(
the great thing about it is that it records to SD memory cards, at the
same time you record to tape, it can use DV or HDV formats. i think in
HDV this sony product don't work with the different Canon HDV (it has
to do with progressive / interlaced and 1080 / 720).
You probably in the end would use a USB 2.0 SD memory card reader and
you were done. and you could have the cassette tape as backup anyway.
it depends a lot on the kind of work you do with the camera.
its just a crazy idea. :)
