"conventional" wisdom (begging forgiveness) has it that the folks who attend ALA Midwinter are higher up on the food chain in their respective organizations and actually make purchase decisions...or more importantly, they are the folks who will later be asked to consider requests from their line staff for new products and services and are able to make decisions about feasibility because they can have already seen some of the products and services available. And as you point out, traveling to San Diego in January from Chicago is probably win-win.
