For all the trouble this has caused, has everyone actually looked at the site with the ads?
In my opinion (formed from about 20 minutes of hitting "random page" while logged out) Wikia has done a fabulous job keeping the ads inobtrusive and yet still potentially capable of generating revenue. Many sites with much higher traffic do much worse, for example (pulled randomly off the cnn.com US front page): http://www.thebostonchannel.com/cnn-news/17790506/detail.html Wikia has none of this "interrupt the article right in the middle" crap, and additionally they seem to have done a good job keeping their site accessible to a wide range of browsers. I have never had any problem at all on wikia with Opera at home or IE6 or 7 at work, whereas the above linked news site actually _covers_text_ with the ads in Opera. Now, nearly every site that I visit on a regular basis on the internet has advertising of some kind. It is really something I have come to accept, as long as it is done in a professional and inobtrusive manner. Web comics, news sites, even search engines, all have advertisements filling any unused space and sometimes right in the middle of the page. When Wikia announced that they would start placing advertisements in articles, I was understandably apprehensive. But when I read further to see that they planned on placing a _single_ ad near the top of our pages, I breathed a sigh of relief. I think that had they not also changed the default skin, I may not have noticed right away. Personally, I think a couple of ads off in a corner are a small price to pay for the great hosting, reasonable bandwidth, and excellent support that we get from Wikia. Many great web sites get at least some ad revenue. Even slashdot has a few ads here and there. And, as far as ads go, things could be a lot worse. If we start getting ads with sound, or ads that pop up over the article text, then I will be worried. Other than that, unless we start getting a lot of complaints from wiki visitors, I don't think we need to start making a big deal over this. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message from the "vim_use" maillist.
