I've used gedit sometimes and I must say it is a very good editor, fast,
with lots of nice features and very apt for development. Very good
indeed... except it is not Vim. As feature-full as gedit is, any Vim
user will feel "crippled" when using it. In short: I miss a lot of
things when using gedit, and modality is not one of them ;) Apart from
syntax highlighting there's no much work that gedit does for you when
programming, and after using Vim for a while one gets used to the fact
that the editor can (and should) do a lot of automatic work for you.

Oh, my, time flies! Last time I used WordStar was back in 1991, I didn't
even have a computer of my own back then! Compared with the very
difficult to use although powerful editor (EDT) in a very old VAX/VMS
that I had to use at the time to code in Pascal, WordStar and later
Turbo Pascal were marvellous. OTOH, VAX/VMS was MUCH better than MS-DOS,
even when used thru an old VT-102 together with other 20 users at the
same time (the DEC machine had a CPU that could be compared in power to
a i...@33mhz). Just incredible, but EDT was a pain to use.

For some people, Vim may look a bit out-of-fashion, specially the
console version, taking into account all the nowadays apps with all
their bells and whistles, but it is, to date, the best editor I've used,
and I measure the quality from the effort I have to make to proficiently
do my editions duties. A very old "vi" which I used on an Ultrix machine
at the same time I used EDT on VAX/VMS was much better than EDT,
although I didn't like the modal aspect...

I must confess I don't use the help so much, but the thing that I like
the most in Vim is its customizability too, specially in the aspect of
"do this for me automatically".
